Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Nu Alpha Omega Chapter was proudly chartered on January 19, 1980, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The chapter was founded by fifteen visionaries: Theola Baylor, Asonya L. Berlin, Brenda D. Bines, Mildred D. Brevard, Marion W. Bryan, Janie F. Gill, Jocelyn E. Howard, Genell Jefferson, Dora L. President, Vernell President, Catherine Ravenell, Rena Sanders, Lynette T. Smith, Luretha B. Sumpter, and Betty D. White.
These charter members, many of whom had returned to their hometowns in Berkeley County, were inspired to create a local chapter to serve and uplift their community. Sparked by conversations between Sorors Genell Jefferson and Mildred Brevard, the idea to form a chapter quickly gained traction. Through their leadership and with the support of South Atlantic Regional Director Deloris Oliver, an interest group was established. With meetings held in Mildred Brevard’s home, the group grew to the required fifteen members, and planning for a new chapter began in earnest. It was then that Genell Jefferson became Nu Alpha Omega’s first president.
Throughout its existence, Nu Alpha Omega has remained a pillar in Berkeley County, known for its steadfast commitment to excellence in service, scholarship, and sisterhood. Under the leadership of dynamic presidents from Genell Jefferson to the current president the chapter has continued to grow in membership, enhance its community engagement, and uphold the ideals of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
